ANBOUND's Observation: Lithuania Seeks EU’s Countermeasures against China for Customs Ban
Chan Kung

Lithuanian news site 15min quoted a timber-exporting company as saying that its trading partner in China could not clear customs for the containers arrived in Shanghai recently, as the local custom registry system no longer lists "Lithuania" since December 1. This was confirmed by Vidmantas Janulevičius, president of the Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists.

The company said that several Chinese agents had indicated that Lithuania was removed from the system, and that apart from Shanghai, other ports are also experiencing problems where goods could not be cleared.

Both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economy and Innovation of Lithuania stated that they had not received any official information. In response to media inquiries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that it knows that Lithuanian goods may encounter obstacles in customs clearance, and that it has contacted the European Union to seek collective countermeasures against China.

Aušrinė Armonaitė, Lithuania’s Minister of Economy and Innovation, said that the European Union is a common market and a political community. She stated that with China wiping out Lithuania from the map, it would be difficult to guarantee that other countries will not face similar encounters in the future.
