The Economic, Environmental and Public Health Impacts of the Trans Canada Trail
Econsult Solutions, Inc. (ESI)

The Trans Canada Trail is a vast network of recreational trails that spans 28,000 kilometers across Canada. ESI's assessment of the Trans Canada Trail outlines the economic and environmental benefits of the network and emphasizes its impact on the local surrounding communities who have much to gain from use of the trails. Overall, the network plays a major role in enhancing economic vitality, promoting healthy living, and attracting visitors.

The Trans Canada Trail has many environmental benefits predominantly through the preservation of natural resources and ecosystems. To measure these benefits, the total land cover variation of each province along with the associated values of each ecosystem was calculated.

The trail network is also instrumental in promoting healthy lifestyles on a myriad of factors. By providing Canadians with accessible and cost-effective opportunities to engage with physical activities, the trail has increased both physical and mental health by aiding in the reduction of significant risks of cardiovascular diseases, Type 2 diabetes, obesity, anxiety, and many other risks.

The trail also contributes heavily to the local economy through spending by trail users. Residents and visitors often spend money on goods and services related to recreational activities, thereby stimulating economic activity in the local area.

All in all, the Trans Canada Trail not only enriches the environment and public health, but it also provides a significant boost across the Canadian economy.
