Didi system glitch lasts 12 hours, with company apologizing for service breakdown
Global Times

Chinese ride-hailing app Didi resumes normal operations at mid-day Tuesday after a breakdown lasting as long as 12 hours due to "systems malfunction," losing tens of millions of transactions worth more than 400 million yuan ($56.43 million), according to media reports.

"The system financially returned to normal," a Didi driver in Beijing told the Global Times at 14:00 pm on Tuesday. "There have been problems with Didi system around 11 pm on Monday. The system shows that I have received the order but information such as the locality of passenger couldn't show up, and as a result, I couldn't reach the passengers," he said.

Didi issued two statements on Monday and Tuesday, apologizing for systems failure.

In Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong Province, Didi services including ride-hailing and bike-sharing resumed by 10:30 am on Tuesday, local media Nanfang Daily reported on Tuesday. It said a system issue of around 12 hours is the longest system failure for Didi in recent years.

According to Didi's financial results for the third quarter this year, its total travel transactions reached 72.5 billion yuan, delivering daily average transactions of 31.3 million yuan. It's calculated that Didi would lose tens of millions of transactions as a result of the system issue, with lost transaction volume worth more than 400 million yuan, according to the report.

With Didi's latest breakdown, other ride-hailing platforms such as Gaode saw a surge in transactions. A Beijing-based passenger told the Global Times that she caught a taxi via Didi Tuesday morning, but a driver from another ride-hailing platform received the order and came to pick up her.

The hashtag "Didi breaks down" became a trending topic on Sina Weibo on Tuesday morning. A net user posted that if a lesson should be learned from Didi's case is that everyone should attach importance to cyber security, as Didi system failure not only makes it difficult for commute, but also disrupts a user's daily life.
