Currently, there are widespread environmental pollution issues across China but some of the sewage treatment plants in the country are merely a display. ANBOUND research team thinks that although there are many sewage treatment plants in the country, a large number of them do not function efficiently due to marketization deficiency and low cost administrative control on pollutant emission. In order to alleviate financial burdens of local governments under the context of new urbanization, and also to highlight initiatives to attract investment, travel, leisure and residential values, the following measures ought to be adopted: increase the cost of pollutant emission, abolish administrative division as well as strengthen regional coordination of sewage treatment capacity.
